Max ha dieci anni ed è un bambino solitario, emarginato dagli altri suoi coetanei e, soprattutto, vessato dai continui soprusi del bullo della scuola, Minus. Per sfuggire alla sua solitudine, Max ha inventato due amici immaginari, Sharkboy, un ragazzo metà umano e metà squalo, e Lavagirl, una ragazza con le mani e i capelli di fuoco che brucia e scioglie qualunque cosa tocchi. Magicamente i due personaggi fantastici diventano reali e insieme a loro Max intraprende una straordinaria avventura per dimostrare che i sogni possono veramente realizzarsi. Sulla loro strada però si intromette il perfido Mr. Electric, un essere malvagio che vuole distruggere i sogni dei bambini per mezzo di un incantesimo...
